As an Atlanta Georgia Photographer, I get asked this often from the couples that I have the honor of shooting their couple and engagement photos. I often hear, “but I am so awkward” or “I don’t know how to pose.” If this is you, no worries!! In this blog, I am sharing my best couple poses that capture the most genuine and authentic reactions so that you don’t feel like your photos look stiff, and forced. So, let’s get into it!
All of my engagement and couple sessions are romantic and authentic to the couple captured. I love to really focus on the unique love shared between each couple by tailoring my best couple poses to use in the photoshoot. For example, if the couple is more laid back and playful, I will incorporate more movement prompts. Whereas, if the couple are more serious and reserved, I will choose more formal posing that feels like them! The key here is to ensure that each couple is comfortable with the prompts that I give. If you’re not comfortable during the photoshoot, you’re going to be able to see that in every photo – and of course, that is not what we want to capture!
I love to get to know all of my clients before their session through a pre-session questionnaire. This questionnaire provides me with a better idea of the couple and what vibe they are wanting to go for during their engagement session. My ultimate goal is that each couple arrives to their photoshoot and feel comfortable and relaxed. An engagement photoshoot is so much more fun when you have built a connection with your clients beforehand! I genuinely want each session to feel like a date or night out with friends, but while taking engagement photos. After each of my photoshoots, I love staying connected so that I can grow with them and capture their love and life as it changes and evolves!
No need to aimlessly scroll through Pinterest looking for the best couple poses to recreate. I always share with couples that their outfits actually do matter when it comes to posing! Keep in mind that the more movement based couple poses may not work best if you are wearing a dress.
In this couple pose, I have the couple walking towards the camera. This is a great couple pose to start with at the beginning of the session because it helps get the couple comfortably moving without being too complicated of a prompt. It is also great because there are tons of variations that you can do with it. Here are a few of my favorites: holding hands, bumping hips, leading the other, arm around the shoulders, walking towards or away from the camera, or capturing the photo from a unique angle.
If the couple that I am working with does not love PDA, this isn’t the pose I use during their session. On the other hand, I have one person in the couple attack the other with kisses everywhere while the other person tries to avoid them. This can also be considered the kiss your 5 favorite body parts on your significant other. I love this prompt because it creates the most genuine photos.
This is a very intimate and romantic pose where I have each couple facing each other. This prompt can also be tweaked differently to be a butterfly kiss or smile with your teeth.
This couple pose is where I have one person whisper in the others ear to make them smile or laugh. It can also be an intimate pose that is great for close up shots of the couple!
This couples pose might be my favorite! During this couples pose, I have one person stand behind the other and link hands while rotating their interlocked arms around like a windmill or airplane. For a slightly different version I will prompt the windmill and then wrap into each other in a hug from behind. This one is great for candid reactions and emotions that result in lots of laughs.
And as a bonus, this couple pose is where I prompt one person to scoop the other up from under the bum while spinning around. This is great for slow shutter intentional blur photos as well a couple that is wanting lots of movement during their photoshoot.
Showing up as your third wheel ready to document your one-of-a-kind love story is kinda my jam. Based out of Georgia, I create genuine and beautiful images that capture the essence of that exact moment. My photography style is true to life, vibrant, and colorful.
