One of my favorite things about the couples I get to document is how willing they are to roll with whatever their wedding day brings. A missing boutonnière? We’ll find another flower. The timeline is running behind? We’ll rearrange a few things. Mother Nature decides to ignore the carefully checked forecast and rain for the entire wedding day? Well, we’ll grab the umbrellas and make something beautiful anyway. Marlee and Alex’s spring wedding on Tybee Island was the perfect example. Plan A included a sunny afternoon, the right amount of cloud cover, and a comfortable 75-degree day near the water. Mother Nature apparently did not receive that itinerary.

Instead, the rain settled in and stayed (aside from 1 beautiful moment at the end of the day!) But Marlee and Alex quickly adjusted, trusted their vendors, and remained focused on why everyone had gathered in the first place. The result was an intimate Tybee Island wedding filled with the most elegant details, a porch ceremony, emotional moments from friends, family, moody couple portraits, and a reception where nobody seemed remotely concerned about the weather.

Here is what made their celebration so beautiful, rain and all! 

Marlee and Alex’s Tybee Island Wedding

Before we discuss the rain, we need to talk about the details because Marlee and Alex absolutely understood the assignment.

Their wedding party wore all black, which gave the entire day a polished, understated look while keeping the focus exactly where it belonged: on the two of them!

Marlee’s florals were simple, elegant, and genuinely breathtaking. Her bouquet was filled with white roses, which will always have my heart. There is something about a classic white rose bouquet that never needs to shout for attention. 

Their wedding favors were personalized matchboxes, and can I just say that I am thrilled matchboxes are making a return? They are useful, easy to personalize, and look adorable scattered across a reception table. A wedding favor that your guests might actually keep, we love to see it.

The point is, every detail felt intentional without making the day feel overly styled or formal. That balance fit their celebration perfectly.

Pivoting to a Covered Porch Ceremony

Marlee and Alex originally planned to host their ceremony in the courtyard of the private Tybee Island residence. As the rain continued, however, it became clear that the courtyard was not going to be the most comfortable option. Rather than waiting around and hoping the weather would suddenly change its mind, everyone pivoted. The ceremony was moved to the front porch, where Marlee and Alex could remain (mostly) dry while exchanging their vows.

The porch gave the ceremony a close, intimate atmosphere. Their guests gathered nearby as the rain fell around the property, creating a setting that felt less like a production and more like everyone had been invited into a meaningful family moment.

A live violinist played as Marlee walked down the aisle and continued performing throughout cocktail hour. The music, the sound of the rain, and the closeness of everyone gathered on the porch made the ceremony feel incredibly personal. While it was not the ceremony they originally pictured, it was most definitely one they would never forget. 

Moody Wedding Portraits Along the Water

Some of my favorite moments during any wedding happen in the brief pause between cocktail hour and the reception.

You have officially made it through the ceremony! Your guests are enjoying themselves and the two of you finally get a few minutes to breathe, look at each other, and process the fact that you actually just got married. There is always this sweet, slightly disbelieving giddiness during that part of the day. Like, Wow. We really just said “I do.” Now what?

For Marlee and Alex, that moment included walking out onto a pier overlooking the wetlands for their newlywed portraits.

The rain had deepened the colors surrounding us. The sky was soft and gray. Everything felt quiet, romantic, and a little dramatic in the best possible way. It was most definitely giving Nicholas Sparks minus the emotionally devastating ending.

Rather than trying to make their photographs look like they were taken on a sunny day, we leaned into the atmosphere we had. The muted light and wet landscape gave their portraits a moodier quality that felt honest to their wedding. And then what do you know, the sun peeked out right before heading into the reception!

A Private Wedding Celebration on Tybee Island

Marlee and Alex hosted their celebration at a private residence on Tybee Island, giving the day the close and comfortable feeling of a backyard wedding.

Everyone stayed connected throughout the celebration. Family members helped one another. Friends gathered beneath covered areas when the rain picked up. Conversations continued naturally instead of guests constantly being moved from one formal event space to another.

That closeness became one of the best parts of the wedding.

Smaller celebrations give you more time to be present with the people you invited. You are not trying to greet 200 guests before dinner ends or realizing later that you barely spoke to one entire table. Instead, the weekend can feel more like a shared experience.

Marlee and Alex’s guests were genuinely excited to be there, and they did not allow the rain to change that. Everyone came ready to support the couple, enjoy the celebration, and have a very good time once the reception began.

And that reception was popping.

Once the music started, there was no lingering disappointment about the courtyard ceremony or the wet weather outside. People danced, laughed, and fully committed to the party. The energy was joyful, relaxed, and completely centered on Marlee and Alex.

Why Plan a Wedding on Tybee Island?

For anyone considering a wedding on Tybee Island, my answer is a wholehearted yes.

Of course, I may be slightly biased. I am a Georgia wedding photographer, after all. But Tybee Island genuinely offers something special for couples who want a relaxed coastal wedding without losing the intimacy and personality of the day.

Tybee gives you access to beaches, marshland, piers, private residences, historic spaces, hotels, and established wedding venues—all within a relatively compact island setting. It is also close enough to Savannah that your guests can turn the trip into a full coastal Georgia weekend.

How to Handle Rain on Your Wedding Day

You know what they say: rain on your wedding day is good luck.

Is that something people originally started saying to calm down worried couples? Possibly. But I am choosing to believe it anyway. Thankfully, the weather did not deter anyone from having an incredible time celebrating Marlee and Alex. Part of that came down to attitude. Marlee and Alex remained flexible, their guests stayed upbeat, and their vendors were prepared to adjust the plans as the conditions changed.

Marlee and Alex’s wedding on Tybee Island was a beautiful testament to focusing on what mattered and releasing what did not. The ceremony location changed. The rain stayed longer than anyone hoped. A few parts of the original plan had to be reconsidered.
