Everything You Need to Know to Create a the Perfect Timeline!
Planning your wedding day timeline can feel a little overwhelming at first. But don’t stress! With the right plan in place, your big day is gonna flow like a dream, letting you soak up every single moment without a worry in the world. Whether you’re saying “I do” in a fancy venue or eloping in the mountains (so epic!) A solid timeline keeps everyone on the same page – from your wedding party to your vendors.
Create a wedding timeline that makes your day totally seamless, stress-free, and absolutely unforgettable with these 7 tips!
The whole day is about your love, so of course we need to center this whole day around when you’re officially tying the knot! Think about what time of day you want to say your vows – sunset, early afternoon with bright blue skies, or a mid-afternoon celebration. Every other part of your day is going to revolve around this moment!
P.S. Add extra buffer time before and after the ceremony time to help ease the stress of any unforeseen delays
Alright y’all, here’s a little wedding day timeline magic tip – when planning all those fun pre-ceremony activities, it’s always best to work backwards from your ceremony time. Trust me, this way you won’t be scrambling to fit everything in at the last minute. Let’s keep things organized and stress-free!
Hair and Makeup: Your hair and makeup (HAMU) team will give you a good estimate based on how many of your crew they’ll be glamming up, but as a general rule, plan for 60-90 minutes per person. Pro tip: the more relaxed you are, the more amazing you’ll look!
Getting Ready Photos: I cannot stress this enough—make time for those fun, candid moments while you’re getting ready! These are the memories you’ll treasure forever, so soak it all in, pop some bubbly, and just enjoy being in the moment. You’ll thank yourself later!
First Looks + Portraits: If you’re doing a first look (which, btw, I’m totally here for!), plan for 45-60 minutes. This gives you time to have that special moment and knock out some gorgeous portraits before the ceremony. Bonus: You can get your bridal party and family photos done too, so you’re not rushing to fit everything in during cocktail hour. More time to party? Yes, please!
Transportation Time: Don’t forget about travel time! Whether you’re heading from your getting-ready spot to the ceremony site, or from one venue to another, make sure to pad the timeline with a little buffer for traffic. Better safe than stressed, right?

Cocktail Hour: Plan for about an hour here. It’s the perfect time for sneaking off for a few more dreamy portraits or just having a sweet little moment with your partner to take it all in!
Grand Entrance: Time to make your big debut! Whether you roll in with your whole bridal party or keep it chill and lowkey, this is such a fun way to kick off the celebration as newlyweds!
Dinner + Speeches: Depending on how the meal’s being served, expect dinner to take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. And don’t forget to leave 20-30 minutes for those heartfelt (and sometimes hilarious!) speeches!
First Dances + Cake Cutting: Whether you’re going for a formal vibe or keeping things more relaxed, be sure to plan enough time for your first dance, a little mingling with your guests, and, of course, cutting that cake!
Wedding Exit: And finally, the grand finale! From sparklers to bubbles or a classic getaway car, plan your exit with some serious style – and end the night on a high note!

Trust me, transitions can easily add 10-15 minutes between each part of your day! But hey, if you don’t end up needing all that time? No worries! It just gives you more flexibility to breathe, relax, and enjoy some downtime with your love. 💕
Make sure that all of your vendors are on the same page with your wedding day timeline! As a photographer, I personally am looking at your wedding day timeline multiple times each hour, but you want to make sure everyone else is, too! For example, a photographer is going to know how long it’s going to take to document different moments of the day, whereas your caterer is going to have more info about how long dinner prep will take.
Okay, I know my perfectionist couples don’t want to think about this, but things are bound to get a little messy (in the best way, of course!). Life happens, y’all, so adding in some buffer time is a lifesaver. Give yourself a little breathing room—whether it’s for hair and makeup, travel between venues, or just catching your breath between all the excitement. You’ll thank yourself when you’ve got those extra few minutes to just chill!
