If the phrase “engagement poses” makes you feel a little tense, like you’re about to be told exactly where to put your hands and how to smile on command like you’re back in ‘09 at JC. Penny’s— I want to gently stop you right there. Because that’s not how your engagement session with me will go down.
Engagement photos aren’t about performing for the sake of getting that Pinterest-esque photo (although, we will get a few of those). They’re about easing into the moment, getting comfortable together, and letting things unfold in a way that actually feels like you. This engagement pose guide exists to walk you through how I approach engagement poses—using movement, prompts, and intentional details so you never feel stiff, overly posed, or unsure of what to do.

This session isn’t about getting photos out of the way to check it off the “to-do list”. It’s about getting comfortable together, which is why engagement sessions play such an important role in how your wedding day eventually feels.
Think of this as a living, breathing home base for engagement poses, prompts, and ideas, one that will continue to grow as my work (and my couples) evolve.

Almost every couple tells me some version of:
That’s actually very normal and why my job exists. And it’s exactly why I don’t rely on stiff, overly structured engagement photo poses that may look good for someone else, but be really awkward for you.
Instead of putting you into a pose and asking you to hold it, I guide you with prompts—simple actions that create movement, connection, and natural reactions as if the camera was never there.

Here’s the difference between a pose and a prompt & why the difference matters so much.
Prompts lead to:
If you’ve ever wondered how to pose engagement pictures without looking awkward, this is the answer and my go-to photography style.

Every engagement session starts the same way. By simply walking. This is especially true in locations like Piedmont Park, where walking paths and open green space make movement feel effortless.
Walking gets your body moving, shakes off nerves, and helps you forget about the camera
Some of my go-to walking prompts includes:
Sometimes I’ll even have you bump into each other a little—think slightly tipsy walk home energy. It almost always leads to laughter, which immediately softens everything that follows.
This is how we ease into the session, especially when outdoors where movement already feels natural.

Once you’re warmed up, I’ll layer in prompts that bring out connection without forcing it.
One favorite? What I lovingly call the “machine gun kiss.”
One of you kisses the other as many times as possible in a few seconds.
What happens every time:
These are the moments that turn into the photos you end up loving the most.

Other movement-based engagement poses I use often:
Outdoor engagement sessions are perfect for this kind of movement, especially in open spaces, fields, or parks.

I believe there is a misconception that engagement photos need to feel a certain way. Sure, there are moments of excitement and high energy, but I believe that not everything needs to be energetic. And honestly? I let the couples I’m working with guide that energy to whatever their natural vibe is.
Besides, some of the most meaningful engagement photo poses come from slowing things down. See what this looks like from an engagement session at Berry College.

A few prompts I love:
These moments feel quiet, connected, and deeply natural especially in soft light that has some texture or unique scenery to compliment the moment.
There are classic engagement poses that I use, but always with intention and again — after feeling out the vibes of what feels good for the couple I’m documenting.
You may have seen these poses before, and honestly they have a million different names of what they’re called — so here’s what I’ve coined them to be:
They add variety to your gallery without ever feeling forced or stiff.
If you want a quick snapshot of timeless options that will probably never go out of style, I’ve shared a separate breakdown in my Top Couple Pose Ideas post.

Sitting poses only feel awkward when you’re overthinking them. What I usually tell couples: “Pretend you’re watching a movie together on the couch.”
Sit close. Lean in. Let your bodies fall naturally.
Whether we’re sitting on steps, a bench, or low wall, this mindset helps create relaxed engagement photos every single time.

One of my favorite ways to help couples relax even more, especially when outdoors, is by incorporating intentional props.
Not props for posing.
Props for experience.
When your hands are busy and your focus is on each other, posing stops feeling like posing and the photos are ✨chef’s kiss✨(If I do say so myself).

If we’re in a field or park, a simple picnic can completely change the tone of your session. A blanket. A drink. Snacks you actually enjoy.
From there sitting close happens naturally, laughing comes easily, movement feels effortless and your photos feel more lived in.

At winery locations, props are built in and such a great way to naturally incorporate movement.
Wine glasses give your hands something to do. Walking through the vineyard becomes a natural movement prompt. Sitting and sharing a drink instantly pulls you closer.
This is why winery engagement sessions feel so relaxed, they encourage connection without instruction.

Some other fav props to include:
Props don’t need to be elaborate to be meaningful. Some of the best engagement photo prompts come from the simplest additions, especially when they reflect your real life together.
The goal is never to add something for the sake of a photo. It’s to bring in pieces of your real life that help you relax and connect with each other.

Every location offers something different and I always let the surroundings lead.
I’m looking for:
An engagement session in a field will feel different than one downtown and your engagement poses should reflect that.
I’m not about forcing poses onto a location, but instead letting the space shape the experience. Head to this blog post next to see some of my favorite engagement photo locations.

Here’s what I want you to remember: You don’t need to know how to pose, practice before hand or even need to be “good” in front of the camera.
The best engagement photo poses happen when you’re guided, supported, comfy and given permission to just be yourselves.
That’s always my goal, for your engagement session to feel less like a photoshoot and more like a good time spent together.
